Giuseppe Paradiso (drums and percussion)
From Santeramo in Colle (BA - Italy), he started his musical studies on drums at the age of six. He continued at the Conservatory "N. Piccinni "of Bari, with the teacher Beniamino Forestiere, who later dedicated a composition for solo marimba to Giuseppe Paradiso.
He studied at the same time contemporary composition at the conservatory in Bari, with the composer Gianni Nazzareno Francia; in 2007 he graduated in percussion instruments at the same conservatory, with full honors. in the same year he achieved the Inferior Composition Certificate (Compimento Inferiore) from the Experimental Composition School.
Besides his classical training at the conservatory, he started to approach the jazz and modern music; studying drums and attending a lot of master classes and clinics held by internationally known musicians.
He attended “Siena Jazz” Summer Workshop, studying drums with Ettore Fioravanti, Massimo Manzi and Riccardo Zegna. In 2007, he attended "Berklee Summer School at Umbria Jazz" clinics where he received a Berklee Scholarship for a full-time program of four years at the BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC in Boston.
During his time at the conservatory he often performed also as a mallet player (marimba-vibraphone), in fact in the 2003 he participated as a soloist at the "International Marimba Competition" at the Superior National Conservatory of Paris, one of the most prestigious mallet’s competition in the world, performing in front of a jury made up of top exponents. As a drummer and percussionist he performed with several bands, percussion ensembles, chamber music groups, symphonic and pop orchestras such as “Orchestra Sinfonica della Provincia di Bari”, “Orchestra Giovanile del Conservatorio N.Piccinni” di Bari, “Orchestra De Falla”, etc..
His background as a drummer includes different styles of music such as jazz, blues, pop, funk, soul, reggae, rock, folk, flamenco etc..
He has been performing since the age of 16 in various musical genres, and has collaborated with various artists. However his main artistic interest is jazz music.
In the 2008, he received an award from the Italian association GAI “Giovani Artisti Italiani” (Young Italian Artists) with the Italian government’s collaboration.
Also in 2008, he moved to Boston, MA, in the United States, where he is currently studying at the Berklee College of Music; majoring in drum performance. Here he is studying with some of the finest jazz musicians and educators in the world; such as Ian Froman, Ralph Peterson, Casey Schuerell, John Hazilla, Mark Walker, Ed Saindon, Dave Samuels, Victor Mendoza, and Dave Santoro.
Since the 2008 Giuseppe has been an active member of the Berklee community - involved in many Berklee performances and projects. He has also been performing in and around the Boston area, and in Italy.
His appearances include: “Festival Duni” (Matera, Italy), “Festival Paleariza” (Reggio Calabria, Italy), “Euterpe Festival” (Taranto, Italy), Ostuni Jazz Festival 2009 (Ostuni, Italy), “Premio Roma Jam Session” -1st edition (Roma, Italy), “Percussion Festival” at the Conservatory “G.B.Pergolesi” (Fermo-Ascoli Piceno, Italy), “International Folk Festival 2010” (Berklee Performance Center, Boston, MA – United States), “Extravaganza 2009” (Boston, United States) and many jazz clubs, cultural associations, events and programs in Italy, France and United States. He has also been a jazz drummer for a short period with MSC Cruise Line, travelling around the Mediterranean Sea.
Finally, he has been teaching music and drums in Italy for various projects promoted by the voluntary association “Linea Azzurra” for children and teenagers with disabilities and social needs.
