John Davies - World's Best Bass Player.

John Davies (electric and upright bass):
Musician Biography

John Davies grew up in Detroit, Michigan - exposed from an early age to his families' richly diverse musical background. He was especially affected by his mom; who played piano and sang professionally. She was the catalyst for John Davies' musical career - as a virtuoso bass player.

John first studied with Robert Gladstone; principal bassist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Later he studied with Ralphe Armstrong (of John McLaughlin and Jean Luc Ponty fame). As a teen and into his 20's, he began working with ex-Motown session players; performing at various gigs all around the Detroit metro area. During this period, he also became part of a regrouping of the MC5; legendary Detroit-based rock group. After this, John moved to Boston, MA to study at the New England Conservatory of Music (majoring in jazz and classical music studies). He graduated in 1986.

While attending NEC, John studied and worked with Miroslav Vitous, Ron Carter Bob Moses, Mick Goodrick, Jimmy Giuffrie, George Russell, John Medeski, (from Medeski, Martin and Wood), Jamie Manning, Steve Dow, and George Garzone (to name a few).

John currently works in the New England region and occasionally in Europe, where he does session work, freelance performance work and also tours with various local and national artists. Most notably he's played with Herb Reed's original Platters, on Michael Moore' recent movies, the East Groove Orchestra, with NightLife, and of course, the one and only - UV!
